SIAC Football: Week 3 Game Recaps

Week 3 recap of the games throughout the SIAC:

Kentucky State vs. Benedict (Augusta City Classic)
 
Benedict got out to a fast start, scoring the first 14 points of the game, including a 17-yard run by Jonathan James and 1-yard run by Pat Riley. Late in the second quarter, Kentucky State’s Jerrell Noland would get the Thorobreds on the scoreboard with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jovan Washington. Benedict would respond with a 9-play, 78-yard drive that concluded with another 1-yard Pat Riley touchdown run, giving Benedict a 21-6 halftime lead. After halftime Kentucky State took control of the game, scoring 14 points in the third quarter on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs by Shannon Frieson and Anthony Bodkins, respectively, bringing the score to 21-20 heading into the fourth quarter. With 52 seconds remaining in the game, Kentucky State’s Jerrell Noland capped off a 5-play, 61-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give Kentucky State the win over Benedict, 26-21. Kentucky State’s Anthony Boykins (107 yards) and Shannon Frieson (90 yards) rushed for a combined 197 yards and two touchdowns (1 each). Benedict’s Renando Rose rushed for 146 yards. Kentucky State’s Stephen Scarborough led all tacklers with nine (3 solo, 6 assist).

Fort Valley State vs. Savannah State
 
Savannah State took an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter, including a 21-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Cedric Chambers. Early in the second, Fort Valley State would get on the board with 13 points, including two Justin Rosenbaum field goals and a 48-yard interception return by Dominique Patterson, giving FVSU a 13-10 halftime lead. Fort Valley State score early in the third when Nicholas Stephens hit Tony Davis for 45 yards. Aaron Courtney added a 2-yard touchdown run midway through the third to give the Wildcats a 27-10 lead. Fort Valley State would add two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 7-yard Tony Reid pass to Demario Barber and another interception return by Dominique Patterson, to give them a 41-10 victory over Savannah State. FVSU’s Tony Davis had 10 catches for 107 yards. SSU’s Justin Babb rushed for 65 yards on 14 carries while J. Vince Cochran led all tacklers with 12.

Miles at Concordia
 
Miles scored first with a 24-yard Patton Chambers field goal. Concordia would respond two first quarter touchdowns, including a 33-yard pass to J. Hamilton from Garrett Parker and a 35-yard interception return by Eddie Cribbs. Early in the second, Miles would respond with two touchdown runs, a 5-yarder by Robert McCray and a 29-yarder by Jordan Lewis, to give Miles a 17-14 lead. After a touchdown and a field goal by Concordia, Miles responded with another field goal by Patton Chambers to make the score 24-20 Concordia at the half. After the break, Concordia would score 28 unanswered points to defeat Miles 52-20. Miles quarterback Carlton Hill threw for 154 yards. Concordia’s S.Stephens completed 4 of 7 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns.  Miles’ Justin Hill finished with six tackles and an interception.

Stillman at Tuskegee
 
Tuskegee got on the board first with a 9-yard touchdown run by Stephen Freeman. The Golden Tigers then exploded for 21 second quarter points, including 19-yard pass from Joshua Harris to Antoine Mitchell, to take a 28-0 lead into the half. Early in third, Stillman scored their first points of the game on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Chris Mayabb to Logan Thomas. Midway through the fourth, Stillman would score again when Ryant Denton hit Ronald Davis for a 29-yard touchdown pass, making the score 28-15 after successful two point conversion. Tuskegee would end any hopes of a Stillman comeback when Jeremy Williams found Antoine Mitchell for a 51-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth. Tuskegee would another late touchdown to defeat Stillman, 41-15. TU’s Antoine Mitchell caught three passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Stillman receiver Ronald Davis caught three passes for 40 yards and a touchdown while Mike Ricks finished with seven tackles and an interception.

Clark Atlanta at Albany State
 
Albany State scored the game’s first points when quarterback Stan Jennings found LiRonnie Davis for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Clark Atlanta’s defense would respond with two touchdowns, including a 25-yard interception return by Darel Strong and a 42-yard fumble return by Dominic Hughes, to give the Panthers a 13-7 lead midway through the third quarter. Albany State would respond with a 17-yard touchdown run by Stan Jennings to take 14-13 lead. ASU running back Robert Welton would put the game away with two 26-yard touchdown runs to give the Golden Rams a 28-13 win over Clark Atlanta. ASU’s Robert Welton rushed for 103 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Clark Atlanta’s Harrison Porter led all tacklers with 10 tackles, including two tackles for loss.

Lane at Morehouse
 
Morehouse came out fast and never looked back. After an Ian Mullen field goal, quarterback Byron Ingram found Derrick Hector for a 10-yard touchdown pass to go up 10-0. In the second, Morehouse would score 23 points, including a safety and 2-yard fumble recovery by Samuel Gilmore to take a 33-0 lead into the half. After another safety by the Morehouse defense early in the third, Ingram would run in for a 3-yard score. Lane would get on the board, midway through the fourth, on a 4-yard touchdown run by Terrell Smith. The Maroon Tigers would add a late touchdown to beat Lane 49-6. Morehouse quarterback Byron Ingram ran for two scores and threw for another score. Lane’s Clifford Jetton had 133 all-purpose yards. The Morehouse defense held Lane to 10 yards of total offense (0 passing, 10 rushing).
