SIAC Football: Week 4 Game Recaps

Week 4 recap of the games throughout the SIAC:

Lane at Tennessee Tech (Thursday)

 

Division I (FCS) Tennessee Tech took control of the game early. TTU scored 28 points in the first quarter including two touchdown runs by Dontey Gay (14, 39). They would add two more touchdowns in the second quarter before the game was called, with 5:01 left in the quarter, due to weather. TTU’s Dontey Gay had 89 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. Lane finished with -23 yards of total offense and did not have a first down.

South Carolina State at Benedict (SC HBCU Classic)

 

Benedict took an early 7-0 lead over Division I (FCS) South Carolina State after Domenic Sivera returned a blocked punt six yards for a score. South Carolina State would score 24 unanswered points, including two touchdown runs by Chris Massey (11, 2), before Benedict quarterback Pat Riley hit Corey Gardhigh for a 77-yard touchdown pass to cut the SCSU lead to 11. SCSU would add to 10 more points to take a 34-13 lead into halftime. After Jeremy Vaughn picked off a South Carolina State pass, Pat Riley led a 6-play, 21-yard drive that ended in a 5-yard Emmanuel Houston touchdown run to cut their deficit to 14 early in the third. South Carolina State would score the game’s next 27 points, including a 12-yard blocked punt return by Joe Thomas and a 54-yard punt return by Richard Christie, to win 61-20. Benedict’s Corey Gardhigh had 3 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown while safety Marquez Gibson led all tacklers with nine.

Albany State at Tuskegee

 

After a scoreless first quarter, Albany State would first on a 13-yard touchdown run by Robert Welton early in the second. With 2:01 left before halftime, ASU quarterback Stan Jennings found Octavius Staton for a 19-yard touchdown pass. After a Tuskegee fumble, Jennings found Staton again for a 12-yard TD pass as time expired, giving Albany State a 20-0 halftime lead. Early in the third Jennings would throw his third touchdown pass of the game, this time to Ronnie Childs for a 26-yarder. Tuskegee would get on the board, late in the third, when Joshua Harris hit Jonathan Lessa for a 28-yard touchdown pass. Late in the fourth, running back LiRonnie Davis would add a 36-yard touchdown run, breaking four tackles on his way to the end zone, to give Albany State a 34-6 win over Tuskegee. ASU’s Stan Jennings threw for 136 yards and three touchdowns while LB Jacob Hardwick had two sacks. Tuskegee’s Isaiah Person led all tacklers with nine.

Stillman at Fort Valley State

 

In his Fort Valley State debut quarterback Eugene Smith got off to a hot start. In less than three minutes, between the end of the first quarter and early in the second, Smith threw three touchdown passes including a 30-yarder to Eric McCree and 50-yarder to Ricardo Lockette. After a Stillman fumble, FVSU’s Tony Reid ran in for a 4-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats up 28-0. The Wildcats would give up their only points of the game on a safety by Stillman’s Jeremy Hall. After the safety, Fort Valley State would continue their second quarter scoring onslaught when Smith hooked up with McCree for a second time, this time for a 70-yarder. On Stillman’s next possession, FVSU defensive back Dominique Patterson intercepted a pass and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown, his third in two weeks. Fort Valley State would add two more two touchdowns, including a 30-yard fumble recovery by Denzell Carter, to win 56-2. Eugene Smith threw for 230 yards and four touchdowns. Stillman’s Chester Hightower finished with 144 all-purpose yards. FVSU’s Ja’Bios Glen was the game’s leading tackler with eight, including seven solo.

Kentucky State at Morehouse

 

 Quarterback Byron Ingram got Morehouse off to a fast start throwing three touchdowns passes in the first quarter, including finding Robert Darby-McNair twice for scores (17, 55). Late in the second, Ingram threw his fourth touchdown of the game, this time finding Derrick Hector for four yards. Kentucky State would respond with 12-play, 63-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard Shannon Frieson touchdown run, making the score 27-7 at the half. Early in the third, Ingram would hook up with Darby-McNair for a third time on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Kentucky would make a comeback attempt, scoring 18 fourth quarter points  including a 38-yard TD run by Shannon Frieson, but it wouldn’t be enough as Morehouse would hold on to win 41-25. Ingram threw for 217 yards and five touchdowns. Frieson rushed for 75 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Morehouse’s Justin Oliver led all tacklers with 10.

Clark Atlanta at Miles

 

Clark Atlanta’s Winston Thompson got the Panthers out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with touchdown runs of three and 30 yards. Late in the second, Thompson would add another touchdown run, this time from 16 yards, to give Clark Atlanta a 21-0 halftime lead. Late in the third Thompson would cap off a 9-play, 70-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run, his fourth of the game. Miles would get on the board, late in the fourth, with 16-yard TD pass from Carlton Hill to Vondragus Hudson. Thompson would add another TD run late in the fourth quarter to lead Clark Atlanta to a 35-9 win over Miles. Winston Thompson finished with 204 yards on 27 carries and five touchdowns. Clark Atlanta’s Harrison Porter and Miles’ Reginald Virges both led their teams with eight tackles.
