SIAC Football: Week 5 Game Recaps

Week 5 recap of games throughout the SIAC:  

 

Savannah State vs. Albany State (Rumble in the Swamp Football Classic)
 
Albany State took control of the game early. ASU running back LiRonnie Davis scored the game’s first points on a 37-yard run late in the first quarter. Midway through the second quarter, ASU quarterback Stanley Jennings hit Christopher Oliver on a 6-yard touchdown pass. Later in the second Robert Welton added a 3-yard touchdown run to give Albany State a 21-0 halftime lead. Late in the third, Albany State running back Kareem Hess adds a 35-yard touchdown run, giving the Golden Rams a comfortable 28-0 lead. Albany State would go on to win, 28-14. Kareem Hess ran for 76 yards on three carries and a touchdown. Savannah State receiver Simon Heyward had 10 receptions for 104 yards. Albany State linebacker Ernest Seay had 10 tackles, including six solos.

Texas Southern vs. Tuskegee (Mobile, AL)
 
Texas Southern scored on their first possession of the game with a 2-yard run by quarterback Arvell Nelson. Later in the first quarter, Tuskegee responded with a 2-yard touchdown run by Nykeem Barton. The second quarter was much of the same. Nelson ran in for a 1-yard touchdown which was followed up by a 5-yard Nykeem Barton touchdown run. With 57 seconds to play, Barton scored his third touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run to give a 21-14 lead. Texas Southern’s attempt to tie the game was derailed when Nelson was sacked by Malcolm Crutchfield and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Brandon Mitchell on the Texas Southern 16, securing the 21-14 win for Tuskegee. Nykeem Barton finished with 58 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns.   Tuskegee’s Ronald Smith finished with 13 tackles, including nine solos, and an interception.

Stillman at Benedict

Late in the first quarter, Benedict scored the game’s first points on a 6-yard run by quarterback Michael Adams. On Stillman’s next possession, Benedict’s Cordel Rogers picked off a Ryant Denton pass and returned it 12 yards for a score. After a Stillman punt, Adams found Kareem Dunlap for a 52-yard touchdown pass to give Benedict a 21-0 halftime lead. Midway through the fourth quarter Benedict would add two more scores, including a 61-yard run by Adams, to secure the victory 35-0.  Michael Adams finished with 107 yards rushing and two touchdowns along 193 yards passing and two more scores. Stillman’s Michael Ricks led all tacklers with nine.

Clark Atlanta vs. Arkansas Pine Bluff
 
Clark Atlanta took an early lead on 27-yard field goal by Joshua Dubois. Arkansas Pine Bluff responded with a 59-yard touchdown run by Justin Billings. After another Dubois field goal early in the second Pine Bluff responded with another touchdown, this time a 3-yard pass by Josh Boudreaux to Raymond Webber. Clark Atlanta would respond with a touchdown of their own on a 1-yard run by quarterback Ronald Thompson to make the score 14-13 at the half. As time expired in the third, Boudreaux found Webber again for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Early in the fourth, Boudreaux hooked up with Webber for a third time on 43-yard touchdown pass, giving Pine Bluff a 28-13 lead. Both teams would add touchdowns late in the fourth, giving Arkansas Pine Bluff a 35-19 win against Clark Atlanta. Clark Atlanta’s Ronald Thompson threw for 161 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score. Josh Boudreaux threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns while running back Justin Billings rushed for 110 yards on nine carries and a score.

Kentucky State at Miles
 
Late in the first quarter, Kentucky State running back Shannon Frieson broke out for 69-yard touchdown run, giving the Thorobreds an early 6-0 lead. After a scoreless second quarter, Miles finally got the board, midway through the third, on 1-yard run by Carlton Hill. Later in the third quarter Kentucky State’s Grandson Brown intercepted a Carlton Hill pass and returned it 16 yards for a score, giving KSU a 12-6 lead. With less than 5 minutes to play, however, Miles running back Jordan Lewis broke a 63-yard touchdown run, giving them a 13-12 lead and the win. KSU’s Shannon Frieson finished with 99 yards on 20 carries and a score. Miles running back Jordan Lewis finished with 83 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Kentucky State’s Derrick Addai led all tacklers with 14 and also had three sacks.

Lincoln (MO) at Morehouse
 
Maurice Woodard returned the opening kickoff 95 yards to give Lincoln an early 7-0 lead. Morehouse would respond with a 7-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by David Carter but would miss the extra point. The Maroon Tigers would take the lead on 33-yard field goal by Ian Mullin.  Late in the second, Morehouse would add to their lead on a 10-yard run by Donnay Ragland. Lincoln would add a touchdown as time expired, giving Morehouse a 16-14 halftime lead. Morehouse would add two touchdowns in the third quarter, including an 11-yard pass by Ragland to Myeric Thompson, to secure their win, 30-14. Morehouse running back David Carter rushed for 211 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. The Morehouse defense recorded nine sacks, led by Derrin Nettles with three, and held Lincoln to 137 yards of total offense, including 19 yards rushing on 44 attempts.
