SIAC Football: Week 2 Game Recaps

Week 2 recap of the games throughout the SIAC:

Lane College vs. Kentucky State
The Dragons got on the board first midway through the first quarter with a 9-yard run by Marcus Woods. Kentucky State would answer when Jerrell Noland threw an 11-yard TD pass to running back Shannon Frieson to tie the score, but the PAT was blocked and returned by Lane to make the score 8-6. Late in the first Kentucky State would take control, scoring 21 unanswered points on three touchdown passes by Jerrell Noland to go up 27-8 at the half. The Dragons would produce the only points of the second half when running back Ezekiel Johnson broke a 65-yard touchdown run early in the third. Kentucky State would go on to win 27-14 to improve their record to 1-1(1-1 in SIAC), while Lane dropped to 0-2(0-2 in SIAC). KSU’s Jerrell Noland threw for 166 yards and four touchdowns while Anthony Boykin`s rushed for 109 yards. Lane’s Ezekiel Johnson rushed for 107 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. Lane’s Jocquise Island and Kentucky State’s Derrick Addai both finished with nine tackles.

Benedict at Tuskegee
Looking to bounce back from their loss to Morehouse, Benedict wasted very little time getting on the scoreboard opening with a 10 play, 59-yard drive that ended with a 22-yard field goal by Andy Polanco to take an early 3-0 lead. Tuskegee would answer with a pair of touchdown runs by Nykeem Barton and never look back. After a TD run by Benedict’s Milton Meyers, Tuskegee quarterback Joshua Harris threw a 15-yard strike Jonathan Lessa to end the half up 20-10. The second half was more of the same as the Golden Tigers’ opened the third quarter with a 14-yard touchdown run by Wayne Williams. Barton would add another touchdown run midway through the fourth to take a commanding 34-10 lead. Benedict would add a late score and two-point conversion to make the final score 34-18. Tuskegee’s Joshua Harris threw for 247 yards completing 14 of 23 passes and a touchdown while receiver Wayne Williams added 122 all-purpose yards and a score. Benedict’s Renando Rose rushed for 72 yards. Golden Tigers’ Brian King had a game-high nine tackles.

Morehouse at Fort Valley State
Fort Valley State got out to a fast start in their home opener after defensive back Dejuan Williams intercepted a William Brack pass and returned it 33 yards for a score, giving the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead. Morehouse would score 20 unanswered points which included a pair of two touchdown passes by Brack and a 95-yard fumble return by linebacker Charlie Wilson. After a field goal and an eight yard TD pass to Tony Davis from FVSU quarterback Sean Frezell, Morehouse’s Olajawuan Gooch took an interception 60 yards to give the Maroon Tigers a 26-17 halftime lead. Early in the third Morehouse quickly put up 14 points, in under 20 seconds, on a pair touchdown passes by quarterback Byron Ingram, including a 20-yarder to Derrick Hector after recovering a Wildcats fumble on the kickoff, to give Morehouse a 40-17 lead. Fort Valley State responded with 17 unanswered third quarter points, including a pair of Tony Reid touchdown runs, to cut the Morehouse lead to six heading into the fourth quarter. Early in the fourth, Ingram scrambled for a 19-yard TD which would prove to be enough to hold off the Wildcats comeback bid, giving Morehouse a 47-34 win, their second straight on the road. Morehouse running back David Carter had his second consecutive 100-yard game, rushing for 113 yards on 26 carries. Fort Valley State’s Tony Reid rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Morehouse defensive back Darrius Williams led all tacklers with 13 and also recovered a fumble.

Stillman vs. Miles (Labor Day Golden Classic)
This year’s Labor Day Classic was the year of the quarterback. Stillman quarterback Chris Mayabb gave the Tigers an early 14-0 lead with a pair of touchdown passes early in the first. Not to be outdone, Miles quarterback Carlton Hill caught fire throwing four touchdown passes over the next quarter and a half, including a 91-yard strike to Gerard Berton late in the second, to give the Golden Bears a 29-14 halftime lead. Mayabb would respond with a pair of second half touchdown passes to Damian Ford, including a 20-yarder early in the fourth that would help take the game into overtime. On the Golden Bears’ first possession of overtime Carlton Hill threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Breante Allen, his fifth of the game, to give the Golden Bears the win, 35-29. Hill completed 19-29 passes for 290 yards and five touchdowns. Mayabb threw for 316 yards and four touchdowns while receiver Damian Ford caught 8 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Stillman’s Antonio Salter led all tacklers with nine.
