2011 SIAC Volleyball Championship: Day One Recaps

Albany, GA-- Opening day of the 25th Annual SIAC Volleyball Championship began on Monday morning in the Albany State University Health and Physical Education & Recreation (HPER) Gymnasium. The following are recaps from day one of tournament action:

#5E Paine College defeats #6W Lane College (25-11, 25-10, 25-9)
The first match of the tournament featured the Lady Lions of Paine College and the Lady Dragons.  In a straight set win, the Lady Lions remain undefeated in first round play. Janae’ Kearse led the Lady Lions in the win with six kills, one service ace, and four digs. Camachio Harris added five kills, five assists, and eight digs. 
The Lady Dragons got three kills and one dig from Tamvernisha Huery and Erica Oliver managed two kills and five digs.  
#3E Albany State University defeats #4W Tuskegee University (22-25, 25-10, 27-25, 25-12)
In match two, it took the Lady Rams of Albany State University four games to overcome the Lady Tigers of Tuskegee University. Sabrina Garcia led the Lady Rams with an 18 kills, four digs, and one block assist performance. Sharme Ridley had 10 kills, three service aces, and three digs.
The Lady Tigers were led by Denavia Harrison who finished with seven kills, one service ace, and five digs. Arielle Walton contributed six kills and two digs for Tuskegee.
#6E Fort Valley State University defeats #5W Miles College (25-22, 17-25, 27-25, 25-23)
The third match of the day pitted the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State against the Lady Bears of Miles College. The Lady Wildcats prevailed in the four-game struggle to remain in the winner’s bracket. Briana Shepperd and Stephanie Brownlee led FVSU in the win. Shepperd had 12 kills, one service ace, six digs, one solo block and one block assist. Brownlee finished with seven kills, two digs, and one block assist.
Jessica Franklin led the Lady Bears with six kills, six service aces, and one solo block. Shanice Davis also had six kills along with five service aces, and two digs for Miles College.
#4E Clark Atlanta University defeats #3W LeMoyne-Owen College (25-22, 25-23, 25-8)
The fourth match of the day Clark Atlanta University defeated LeMoyne-Owen College to advance in the winner’s bracket of the SIAC 2011 Volleyball Tournament. 
Clark Atlanta was led offensively by Danika Lawrence and Alexia Mattox with nine digs each, as Ashley Brooks added five kills. Kailyn Blackmon was credited with a game high 29 assists. Defensively Tyneshia Spears had nine digs and Blackmon ended the match with eight digs while Chanel Trice added seven digs. Lawrence also recorded four solo blocks.
Rachel Walton led LeMoyne-Owen with nine kills, while Shanita Jones added six kills. Bethany Cousin had 13 assists. Defensively Robin Bell led the Lady Magicians with a game high 17 digs.
#3E Albany State University defeats #2W Stillman College (25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20)
The fifth match of the day Albany State University won over Stillman College 3-1 (25-17,18-25,25-18,25-20) to advance in the winners’ bracket of the SIAC 2011 Volleyball Tournament. 
Sabrina Garcia led the Lady Rams with 17 kills, as Sharme Ridley added 12 kills. Jennifer Johnson led the offensive charge with a game high 37 assists. Adrienne Morris ended the game with a game high 19 digs.
Stillman was led by Jamila McKinnis with 17 kills and Ashley Smith with nine kills. Januar Page recorded a game high 26 assists, McKinnis also chipped in 15 assists.
Defensively, Ashley Smith, Page, and Christine Mallory each tallied seven digs and Cynteria Jones contributed two solo blocks.      
#1E Claflin University defeats #5E Paine College (25-19, 25-20, 26-28, 25-20)
In the sixth match of the day Claflin University was victorious over Paine College in four sets. Claflin’s Kathrin Fischer recorded a double-double, with 44 assists 10 digs, along with three service aces. Lauren Calvin had a game high 18 kills, three service aces and three blocks. Chelcey Foster added 11 kills. Courtney Person led the defense with 15 digs, while Laquana Black tallied 13 digs.
Paine was led by Victoria Claytor with 13 kills, and Camachio Harris with 23 assists. Defensively Melande Carter finished with 10 digs. 
#1W Kentucky State defeats #6W Fort Valley State (25-10, 25-13, 25-18)
In the seventh match of the day, Kentucky State University defeated Fort Valley State University in straight sets. The Thorobrettes were led by Ayanna Parker, who finished with 13 kills and a .857 hitting percentage. Brittany Stewart totaled 26 assists while Markeshia Williams led the way defensively with 20 digs.
Andrea Stephanson and Stephanie Brownlee each had three kills for the Lady Wildcats. Stephanson along with Robin Starks each had four digs.
#2E Benedict College defeats #4E Clark Atlanta University (25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19)
The eighth match of the tournament featured second round action between the Lady Tigers of Benedict College and the Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta University. Benedict College prevailed in the four game match and remains in the winner’s bracket. The Lady Tigers were led by Latayvia Mack who tallied 21 kills, five digs, one solo block, two block assists. Ashley Jackson had a game-high 45 assists for Benedict.
The Lady Panthers got 15 kills and three digs from Chanel Trice and Alexandria Mattox contributed 18 kills, one assist, and nine digs. Tyneisha Spears finished with 29 digs for Clark Atlanta.
