SIAC Announces All-Conference Basketball Team Announced
Atlanta, GA—The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference released its 2013 SIAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball All-Conference Team as voted on by the SIAC Basketball Coaches Association.
The men’s team is led by 2013 SIAC Player of the Year Xavier Collier of Benedict College. Collier, a native of Augusta, GA, averaged 15 points and led the conference averaging 4.5 assist per game. The 5-foot-11 senior point guard also averaged 1.4 steals for the SIAC East Division Co-Champion Tigers.
Leading the way on the women’s team is Miles College senior forward Courtney English, the 2013 SIAC Player of the Year. The 5-foot-10 senior from Atmore, AL recorded a double-double in 18 out of 26 games for the Lady Bears this season. For the year she averaged a double-double with 16.4 points and a conference best 12.5 rebounds per game.
Men’s Newcomer of the Year is Morehouse College junior guard Darrius Williams. The native of Detroit, MI led the conference in scoring with 18.1 points per contest, while finishing second in rebounds with 8.3 boards per game. Williams, a two time All-Conference Football player, ignited the SIAC East Division Co-Champion Maroon Tigers this season.
Women’s Newcomer of the Year was awarded to Paine College sophomore Ashley Watts. The 5-foot-6 combo guard finished second in the conference this season in scoring and assists. Watts averaged 19.5 points and 3.9 assists per game. She was also seventh overall in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Tuskegee forward Shaquille Cook was named SIAC Freshman of the Year. The 6-foot-7 center from Atlanta, GA led all freshmen with 10.3 points per game and third overall in the conference in blocks with 1.8 blocks per game.
On the women’s side, Paine’s Kiara Johnson was named SIAC Freshman of the Year. Making an immediate impact for the Lady Lions, Johnson, a 6-foot-2 center from Jacksonville, FL finished second in the SIAC in rebounding (12.1 rpg) and blocks 2.1 bpg. She also averaged 8.0 points per game.
Men’s Defensive Players of the Year was awarded to Stillman College Torrean Walker, while Kadeema Cooper of Albany State University was the recipient of the Defensive Player of the Year for the women.
Men’s Coach of the Year is Grady Brewer of Morehouse. The veteran coach led the Maroon Tigers to a share of the East Division title with a 16-2 record in the SIAC, 18-7 overall. Brewer piloted Morehouse to its first title since winning the overall SIAC regular season in 2004.
Belinda Roby of Tuskegee was named Women’s Coach of the Year after leading Tuskegee to an
undefeated 16-0 record in the SIAC, 19-6 overall.
