SIAC Athletes To Comepete at Outdoor Track National Championships
INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee has announced the participants for the 2013 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Twenty-two Men's and Women's athletes earned qualifying marks in 30 events during the outdoor season and will represent the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at the NCAA Division II Championships, set to begin on Thursday, May 23 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl in Pueblo, Colorado.
Highlighting the men's division is SIAC Track Athlete of the Year Jeffrey Henderson, who was recently named UTFCCA South Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year for the 2013 Season. Henderson, a junior, will qualified in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump events where he is expected to make a push for the National Championships in all three events. Furthermore, Henderson is ranked in the top five in the 100 meters and long jump, while earning a 6th ranking in the 200 meter event, where he earned the 20.97 mark competing in the race for the first time this season at the SIAC Championships.
Joining the Stillman sprinter is teammates and hurdler Phillips Howard, along with long jump specialist Darrell Jackson, Damond Gray, and Daniel Dent.
After placing second at the 2013 SIAC Track & Field Championships, Albany State University qualified seven of its athletes. Sprinters Utayous Benson, Garret Reynolds, Jared Jordan, Tabareyon Jones, Jordan Thompson, distance runner Albert Murrey, and triple jumper Isaiah Leggett will represent the Golden Rams at the Championships.
Albany State, also qualified its 4x100 relay team, which will be joined by Fort Valley State University and Stillman.
Morehouse, the 2013 SIAC Men's Track and Field Champions, will be represented by triple jumpers David Lee and Arvon Amisal.
Benedict's Tre Adderly (pole vaulter), in addition to Claflin's Larry Brunson (100 meter hurdles) and Zacharais Giles (400 meters) will also represent the conference at the NCAA Championships.
In the women's division, South Region Field Athlete of the Year Euphemia Edem is one of the favorites for the individual title in the triple jump event. Edem's mark of 12.73 meters is fourth overall in Division II this season.
Another athlete considered a favorite this weekend is Paine's Baeisha Johnson. The senior ranks second overall in the long jump this season and 8th overall in the high jump.
Other hopefuls for the women are Kentucky State's Keona Jones (long jump) and Benedict College duo Krishanda Campbell-Brown (long jump and triple jump) and Chameka Davis (100 meters).
A total of 754 participants, 377 men and 377 women, will compete in the championships. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.
