Morehouse bests Badgers, 87-73

MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men's basketball team rang in 2018 with an 87-73 interdivisional Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) loss to the Morehouse College (MHC) Maroon Tigers on Monday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.

MHC took a 16-point lead at 35-19 with 5:57 left in the 1st half and held a 45-33 lead at the intermission.

The Maroon Tigers built out a 53-35 cushion two minutes into the 2nd half, but SHC rallied to slice the deficit down to 60-53 by the 11:40 mark off a 3-point jumper by Gresyn Rogers. James Walker put Morehouse back up by 10 with a trey of his own on the other end just 19 seconds later and from there the Badgers would claw back to within a single-digit margin only once more in the contest when senior Walter Massey drained a jumper at 6:31 to make it a 74-65 difference.

Massey led the Badgers with 19 points while junior forward Brandon Fischer added 17 points, sophomore William Loyd put 13 on the board, and senior guard Jack Morrissey had 11 points with three 3-point buckets. Overall, SHC shot 49.1% (26-53) from the field and 41.2% (7-17) from 3-point range. The Badgers hurt their own cause by sacrificing 17 points to 15 turnovers in the face of six steals by Morehouse. At the charity stripe, SHC made 70% (14-20) of their free throw attempts.

The East Division-leading Maroon Tigers (11-0, 6-0 SIAC East) were paced by Tyrius Walker's 25 points followed by 21 points from Martravious Little and 16 points from Jordan Wallace as five Tigers reached double-digits in scoring. MHC shot a scorching 59% (36-61) from the floor and 43.8% (7-16) from 3-point distance while losing 13 turnovers to five Badger steals that turned into 11 points for SHC. Morehouse won the rebounding contest 32-27 and earned a 19-7 advantage in second chance points. Omar Alston turned in a double-double night for the Tigers with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
