COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College volleyball team notched a 3-1 victory against Savannah State University on Tuesday night.
The Lady Tigers won the match 14-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-22, improving their overall record to 12-10 overall and 5-6 in the SIAC. Savannah State falls to 7-11, 6-8 in the SIAC.
Daija Walton led the Lady Tigers with 11 kills and five blocks. Adrionna Washington added 9 kills, while Ashleigh Reeves contributed with 37 assists, 11 digs, and five aces.
In the first set, the scoring went back and forth until the score was 10-9 in favor of Savannah State. Savannah would go on a 9-1 run to take a 19-10 lead, which would be enough to hold on to win the set.
After the first set woes for Benedict, the Lady Tigers settled down and played much better. Benedict opened the second set on a 7-3 run and would hold on to win. In the third set, the Lady Tigers went on a 9-2 run to take a 19-7 lead and eventually would win the set.
In the fourth and final set, Benedict jumped out to a 17-11 lead off a kill by K'Myl Pete. Savannah State would fight back to tie the score at 17. The Lady Tigers answered back with a 6-1 run and would hold on to win the set and clinch the match.
Benedict will host Fort Valley State University on Thursday at C.A. Johnson High School at 6:30 p.m.
