STATESBORO, GA – Senior David Jelks recorded four personal records as the Kentucky State University men's track and field team established 10 PRs while competing at the GATA Classic, hosted by Georgia Southern.
Jelks (Conyers, GA) set personal best marks in the hammer (fifth, 24.47 meters), javelin (sixth, 35.41 meters), discus (eighth, 29.65) and the shot put (10.37 meters). Daniel Woods established a PR with a sixth place finish in the hammer (24.09).
Senior Ed Jones (San Diego, CA) placed third in an individual best distance of 38.62 meters in the javelin. Junior Kolan Livington (Cincinnati, OH) turned in a solid meet, setting a PR with a third place finish in the discus (39.6 meters). He added top eight finishes in the hammer (seventh, 20.19) and shot put (seventh, 11.31).
More personal records continued to fall in the field events as senior Matthew Bizimana (Louisville, KY) placed fifth in the triple jump (11.47 meters). Sophomore Harrison Goss (Indianapolis, IN) added a second place finish in the high jump (1.88 meters).
In his first steeplechase of the season, sophomore Mark Johanneman (Louisville, KY) saved more than 40 seconds off his previous best, finishing the event with the time of 11:13.85. Senior Corey Jones, Jr. (East St. Louis, IL) was fourth in the steeplechase (12:37.98) and senior Travon Stephenson (Chicago, IL) was fifth (12:38.58).
Freshman Zay'Quan Black (Louisville, KY) set personal records in the 100, placing second with the time of 11.04, and in the 200 with a fourth place finish in the time of 22.67. Rahman Davis-Smith added a seventh place finish in the 200 (23.22) and an eighth place finish in the 100 (11.53). Sophomore Joshua Tolson (East St. Louis, IL) was third in the 400 (50.66) and eighth in the 200 (23.4), while Kris Nelson (Memphis, TN) was fourth in the 400 (51.68) and freshman Chase Tandy (Danville, KY) was fifth in the 400 (53.09).
The 4x100 relay team of Goss, Tolson, Davis-Smith and Black was third with a season-best time of 42.7 seconds.
Kentucky State will have a week off before returning to action Saturday, March 30 at the Centre Invitational.
