Wildcats Sweep Past Tigers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After a late start due to Tigers transportation issues, the Wildcats looked the best they have all season to this point. Fort Valley State swept past Savannah State, 3-0, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball Friday night.
 
With its first action since a four-set win last Friday, the Wildcats evened their season mark to 2-2 and 1-1 in the SIAC East with the straight sets 25-19, 25-21 and 25-14 scores. The Tigers fell to 0-2 and 0-1 in the SIAC East.
 
Nia Bell powered 13 kills in 35 swings to power the FVSU offense with two blocks, two digs and an ace to go with them. India King hit .529 on the night with nine kills on 17 attacks without an error and was in on three tandem blocks.
 
Rita Davis dished out 22 assists, dug five balls and served up three aces. Ashley Simmons-Blair dug a team-high 13 Savannah State attacks, while QuiAndrea Moore came off the bench with eight and a kill. Jaelyn Franklin chipped in six digs, two assists, a block assist and one kill.
 
The Tigers' setter Valeria Aldarondo produced 19 assists, four kills, three aces and nine digs for her team.
 
The Wildcats held a 20-17 edge late in the first set until Bell downed a ball to extend the margin to 23-17. The two team split the next four points for the FVSU 25-19 set win.
 
Down 17-15 in the second set, the Wildcats scored the next five points behind Franklin's serving to capture the advantage, 21-17. The Tigers committed an error for to give the home team the 25-21 set win.
 
FVSU wasted no time in the third set with the first five points and seven of the opening eight tallies for a 7-1 lead. Savannah State pulled no closer than five points, 13-8, the rest of the way of the 25-14 third set.
 
FVSU is off until it travels to Albany State next Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 26-28, when it takes part in the SIAC Crossover event for seven matches.
