Wildcats Run out to Lead, Handle Golden Rams

ALBANY, Ga. – The Wildcats took the game to their rival and established a solid first-half lead. Fort Valley State ran out to a double-digit second quarter lead and handled Albany State women's basketball, 75-67, Saturday evening.
 
Leading 31-28 midway through the second frame, the Wildcats (9-10/5-5 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) ran off 11-straight points over a three-minute period for a 42-28 lead with Jah'ne Brown netting five tallies. The FVSU advantage ballooned to 25 points, 63-36, on a Taziha Fanning layup from a Nola Carter dish at 4:15. The Golden Rams made a late fourth-quarter charge, but they could get no closer than the eight-point final margin.
 
Fanning and Carter helped FVSU control the boards to a 55-35 difference. Fanning made 7-of-9 attempts for 19 points to go with her 17 rebounds and four assists. Carter had her own double-double of 16 points on 7-for-14 tries and 11 boards.
 
Brown added 10 points off the bench, including a pair of treys, while Jada Sleet contributed nine points.
 
The Wildcats win snapped a 3-game skid and even its SIAC mark at 5-5.
 
ASU saw Alexandria James down 10-of-21 attempts for a game-best 26 points.
 
FVSU has a week off before it travels to August, Ga., to face Paine College next Saturday, Feb. 1, in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
