Behind powerhouse offense, Lady Tigers stomp Albany State 70-52

ALBANY, Ga. – Savannah State women's basketball continued to tout their offensive domination on Saturday with a 70-52 win over Albany State.
 
The Lady Tigers have the top scoring offense in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), averaging 76.7 points a game. They improve to 11-5 overall this season and take sole possession of second place in the SIAC East Division with a 6-5 conference record.
 
SSU was led on Saturday by sophomore guard Azhana Maxwell who put up 17 points. Joining Maxwell in double-digit scoring was the SIAC's top scorer Le'Andrea Gillis (13), sophomore Robbi Allen (12) and newcomer Ta'Kyla Austin (11).
 
All four players are averaging double figures in each outing this season.
 
Savannah State shot 48.2% from the field and 50% from the free-throw line. They racked up 52 rebounds to Albany State's 31.
 
The Lady Tigers opened the first quarter with an 19-11 advantage, but it was the second quarter where they would take full control of the game. SSU outscored Albany State 15-0 in the second quarter, heading into the locker room with a season-high 34-11 lead.
 
But Albany State answered in the third quarter, outscoring SSU 26-11, cutting their lead to eight points after three periods. The Lady Tigers pushed back out to a huge lead in the fourth, going up by as much as 22 points and outscoring the Golden Rams 25-15 to put a stamp on the win.
 
Savannah State will host Albany State on Feb. 10 in Tiger Arena before heading to Alabama to make up an SIAC game with Miles College on Feb. 12. Tip-off for the Feb. 10 home game is set for 5:30 p.m.
