ATLANTA, Ga. (September 13, 2022) – Kyra Gatson (Lane) was named Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Volleyball
Offensive Player of the Week, while
Jayla Neely (Allen) earned
Defensive Player of the Week, released by the league office on Tuesday.
Jessica Fairly (Spring Hill) was also tabbed
Setter of the Week alongside
Shynique McGee (Clark Atlanta) who earned
Newcomer of the Week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kyra Gatson, Lane
Outside Hitter/Middle Blocker | Freshman | Detroit, MI
Gatson helped the Dragons to three wins during the week with 68 total points on 57 kills and a .440 hitting percentage. The Detroit native added eight blocks and three aces.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jayla Neely, Allen
Libero/Defensive Specialist | Freshman |Rock Hill, S.C.
Neely led the Allen volleyball team to three wins on the week as she totaled 30 digs including 20 in the win over Clark Atlanta.
SETTER OF THE WEEK – Jessica Fairly, Spring Hill
Setter | R-Sophomore | Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
Spring Hill’s Fairly led the Badgers in assists in both matches that she appeared in at the Walk On's UWF invitational over the weekend. On Friday, she recorded 43 against UNC-Pembroke. On Saturday, she tallied 40 in the Badgers' final match against Oklahoma Baptist. The redshirt sophomore leads SHC with 321 assists so far this season.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK – Shynique McGee, Clark Atlanta
Outside Hitter/Middle Blocker | Sophomore | Atlanta, Ga.
In her first collegiate action with Clark Atlanta, McGee earned a double-double with kills and digs in the first weekend of conference play against Benedict and Allen. She scored 18 points vs. Allen with 16 kills and 11 digs. McGee earned 15 kills with 15 digs vs. Benedict.
