Kentucky State 34, Clark Atlanta 20

FRANKFORT, KY - Head Coach Felton Huggins and Kentucky State football bring an exciting brand of football back to "The Hill" with a 34-20 win over the Clark Atlanta Panthers in a Thursday night game inside Alumni Stadium. In his Kentucky State debut, quarterback Christian Perez led the Thorobreds with 74 yards rushing and a long of 40 yards that included one rushing touchdown. Passing, he completed 17 passes for 208 yards with a long of 35 yards. On the defensive side, Roman Hernandez led the way with five solo tackles his teammate Jeremiah Owens matched him five (3 solo and 4 assisted) and added 3.5 tackles for a loss of nine yards, one fumble recovery, and two hits on the quarterback. Both Brandon Wade and Izaya Clay forced a fumble each, with Clay recovering his.

ALBANY, GA - In their highly anticipated season opener, the Albany State Golden Rams were defeated (30-7) by the Wingate Bulldogs on Friday evening at Irwin Belk Stadium in Wingate, North Carolina. With the loss, the Golden Rams begin the Quinn Gray Era (0-1). The Golden Rams received the opening kickoff but fumbled on their first offensive play of the game. After recovering the fumble in the red zone, the Bulldogs took a (7-0) lead after Noah Bell scored a 2-yard run.

Central State 24, Mississippi Valley State 21

In a close matchup, Central State University triumphed over Mississippi Valley State University with a final score of 24-21 during the Chicago Football Classic. Held at Soldier Field, this historic matchup commemorated the event's 25th anniversary, marking the return of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the event after a two-year hiatus.

COLUMBIA, SC - It may be a new year, but the Benedict College Tigers were reminiscent of the dominant and championship team of a year ago, opening the 2023 season with a 52-0 victory over Shaw University in the Carolinas Classic on Saturday night in front of a televised audience. The Tigers accumulated 451 yards of total offense, with a balanced combination of rushing (196 yards, three touchdowns) and passing (284 yards, three touchdowns). The defense did not miss a beat from last year's formidable unit, holding the Bears to 169 yards of offense. Shaw star running back Sidney Gibbs rushed for 75 yards, but the Bears as a team finished with just 77 yards on the ground.

LAKELAND, FL - Savannah State University opened the 2023 football season with a 23-20 win over Southeastern University in a game played at Victory Field on September 2, 2023. A 42-yard field goal by Southeastern's Joel McGrath gave the Fire a 20-16 lead with 6:49 left in the fourth quarter. SSU answered with a 12-play, 66-yard drive that was capped when Jadon Adams scored on a quarterback sneak with 1:30 left. Kenneth Lockhart tacked on the extra point to give the Tigers a 23-20 lead. The big play on the possession was when  Da'Shun Mitchell caught a 10-yard pass from Adams on a fourth-and-three situation, which gave SSU a first and goal at the Southeastern 10. After a holding penalty backed the Tigers to the 20-yard line, Adams connected with Demeke Colbert for an 18-yard pass play to the Southeastern two-yard line to set up Adams' touchdown.

Allen 24, Erskine 17

BLYTHEWOOD, SC - The Allen University football team used big-play offense to overwhelm visiting Erskine College 24-17 to earn a win in their season opener Saturday night from Westwood High. Sophomore QB David Wright threw for 370 yards and 2 TDs on the night while senior WR Deyandre Ruffin recorded 6 receptions for 107 yards and a terrific leaping 27-yard touchdown to put Allen up 7-0 in the first. Freshman RB Alan Riggins then ran in a 69-yard TD scamper to help put the game away in the 4th quarter as Allen would lead 24-10 with 12 minutes to play. Riggins also rushed for a 3-yard score late in the third quarter to put Allen up 17-10. Riggins finished the game rushing for 34 yards and catching two receptions for 76 yards to total 110 yards of offense. Junior WR Jamal Jones also had a solid game grabbing 5 receptions for 77 yards, while fellow senior WR Montrell White caught two passes for 59 yards.

Edward Waters 21, Florida Memorial 38

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The 2023 season did not open the way Edward Waters intended for it to as the Tigers dropped a disappointing 38-21 decision to rival Florida Memorial in the "Big Cat Classic" Saturday afternoon at Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium. For the Tigers (0-1, 0-0 SIAC), the primary culprit in the loss was their issues with penalties. Edward Waters committed 12 penalties for 139 yards in the contest, with many of them being personal foul infractions that cost them valuable field positions.

Virginia Union 45, Morehouse 13

CANTON, OH - The 2023 season did not open the way Morehouse intended for it to as the Maroon Tigers dropped a disappointing 45-13 against Virginia Union in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic on Sunday afternoon at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. For the Maroon Tigers (0-1, 0-0 SIAC), the primary culprit in the loss was their issues with penalties and mental errors. Morehouse committed six penalties, and when it came to mental errors, the athletes were making simple mistakes on plays they have practiced every day. "There's a lot of work to be done", said head coach Gerard Wilcher.

Tuskegee 37, Fort Valley State 31

MONTGOMERY, AL - Avenging two consecutive losses in the matchup to start the season, Tuskegee stuffed a goal line rush from Fort Valley State in the final seconds to start off 2023 with a high-scoring 37-31 win on Sunday night in the Boeing Red Tails Classic. The victory in the head coaching debut of Aaron James was the first Tuskegee win in the three years of the classic, started in 2021 between the two programs inside of the Cramton Bowl.
