ATLANTA, GA – The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced
Football Players of the Week for Week 1 on Thursday, September 7. Allen University's
David Wright was named
Offensive Player of the Week, while
Kentucky State's
Jeremiah Owens earned
Defensive Player of the Week. Also recognized were Tuskegee's
DeJuan McGhee as
Special Teams Player of the Week and
Christian Perez of Kentucky State, named
Newcomer of the Week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – David Wright, Allen University
Quarterback | R-Sophomore | Tampa, Florida
Allen University used big-play offense to overwhelm visiting Erskine College at Westwood in their season opener. During this thrilling matchup, Wright threw for 370 yards and 2 TDs, bringing the team closer to victory, ultimately celebrating a 24-17 win.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jeremiah Owens, Kentucky State
Defensive End | Senior | Greenville, Alabama
Excitement returned to "The Hill" with a 34-20 win over the Clark Atlanta Panthers in a Thursday night game inside Alumni Stadium. Senior defensive end Jeremiah Owens showed determination and skill during this heated matchup with 7 tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss, one fumble recovery, and one sack.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – DeJuan McGhee, Tuskegee University
Wide Receiver | Freshman | Adamsville, Alabama
As a key player in the third, McGhee returned the next kickoff for 92 yards and a touchdown to put Tuskegee up 20 during the Boeing Red Tails Classic. With 135 yards returned that night, McGhee's performance was the best of the week for special teams.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK – Christian Perez, Kentucky State
Quarterback | Graduate | East St. Louis, Illinois
In his Kentucky State debut, Perez led the Thorobreds with 74 yards rushing and a long of 40 yards that included one rushing touchdown. Completing 17 passes for 208 yards with a long of 35 yards, Perez is one to watch for the season.
