ATLANTA — The SIAC will participate in seven matchups this week, with four games televised/streamed nationally. Here's a list of the matchups and where to watch the games.
CLARK ATLANTA VS. MILES – ESPN+
Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. ET
Clark Atlanta will host
Miles for Homecoming in what might be the greatest battle for the throne witnessed this season.
Last week, the Panthers edged out Central State for a 25-20 victory on the road. Down one point, Clark Atlanta drove the ball 58 yards in three plays, with a little more than one minute on the clock, to score the game winning touchdown.
Miles enters the week on a four-game winning streak following a 32-21 victory over Albany State to claim the number one spot in SIAC standings. The Golden Bears imposed their will early, scoring on offense and defense within the first three minutes of the game, creating a deficit Albany State never overcame. Golden Bears’ linebacker
Matthew Yafondo had 5 solo tackles and a quarterback hurry in the victory, earning him SIAC Newcomer of the Week honors.
Miles has bested Clark Atlanta in the last seven matchups dating back to 2011. In last season’s faceoff, the Golden Bears scored early and often, routing the Panthers 55-14.
Game History: 7-0 Miles (since 2011)
Team Standings: Clark Atlanta (5-1-1, 4-1 SIAC); Miles (4-2, 4-0 SIAC)
FORT VALLEY STATE AT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE – ESPN+
Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. ET
Fort Valley State will travel to Orangeburg to face South Carolina State (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
Last week, the Wildcat's quick-strike offense left Allen reeling and unable to recover after piling on 35 points in the second quarter, winning the game 49-40.
Quarterback
Kelvin Durham and returner
DeJuan Bell led the team’s victory. Durham threw for 193 yards and 5 touchdowns, while Bell went for 212 all-purpose yards, including a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown to ignite the second-quarter surge. The performances earned the student-athletes SIAC offensive and special teams player of the week honors, respectively.
The Wildcats will go up against a familiar foe, SC State head coach Chennis Berry, formerly at Benedict and two-time SIAC Coach of the Year.
Team Standings: Fort Valley State (4-2, 4-1 SIAC); South Carolina State (3-2, 0-0 MEAC)
TUSKEGEE VS. KENTUCKY STATE – YouTube
Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. ET
Tuskegee will host
Kentucky State at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium this week.
The Golden Tigers’ 27-17 victory over Lane marks their third win of the season. A 63-yard touchdown run put the Dragons on notice only four minutes in, and the Golden Tigers’ defense continued to apply pressure, holding Lane scoreless in the second half.
Kentucky State also saw success last week, beating Benedict 23-21 at home. The Thorobreds took an early lead, and their first-half advantage held firm despite the offense stalling out in the second half. Defensive back
Lawrence McConnell recorded a season-high 9 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception in the contest, earning him SIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Against common opponents (Morehouse and Lane) this season, Tuskegee prevailed, whereas Kentucky State lost 31-28 against Morehouse in week three.
The Golden Tigers have only dropped three games against Kentucky State since 1998. Tuskegee posted a 36-10 victory over Kentucky State on the road last season.
Game History: 21-3 Tuskegee (since 1998)
Team Standings: Tuskegee (3-3, 3-1 SIAC); Kentucky State (2-5, 2-3 SIAC)
ALLEN VS. BENEDICT – ESPN+
Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. ET
Allen, still searching for its first conference win of the season, will host
Benedict at Westwood High School.
The Yellow Jackets suffered a 49-40 loss at Fort Valley State last week. Despite jumping out to a 13-0 lead, Allen allowed 35 points in the second quarter and never recovered.
Benedict enters the game on a two-game losing streak after a 23-21 loss to Kentucky State on the road. The Tigers’ defense held the Thorobreds scoreless in the second half, but the potential game-winning drive fell short when time expired with Benedict on Kentucky State’s 40-yard line.
Allen has yet to defeat Benedict since rejoining the SIAC in 2020.
Game History: 13-10 Allen (since 1946)
Team Standings: Allen (1-5, 0-4 SIAC); Benedict (2-4, 2-2 SIAC)
ALBANY STATE VS. MOREHOUSE – No stream available
Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. ET
Albany State will host
Morehouse at Albany State University Coliseum for Homecoming.
The Golden Rams slipped a couple of spots down the SIAC standings after falling 32-21 to Miles on the road last week. Albany State’s game plan quickly unraveled when the team found themselves down by two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the game. Unable to respond in a similar fashion, the Golden Rams recorded their first conference loss of the season.
Fresh off a bye week, Morehouse hopes to break its two-game losing streak on the road and add another game in the win column. The last time the Maroon Tigers took the field, the offense recorded a season-low, zero points and the defense allowed a season-high 42 points against Tuskegee.
This season, both teams have defeated a common opponent in Kentucky State. The Golden Rams hold a wider margin of victory in the comparison, winning their game 49-21, compared to the Maroon Tigers’ 31-28 victory.
In 2023, the teams met in the Toyota HBCU NY Classic, with Albany State defeating Morehouse 24-14.
Game History: 13-0 Albany State (since 2011)
Team Standings: Albany State (3-3, 3-1 SIAC); Morehouse (1-5, 1-3 SIAC)
LANE VS. CENTRAL STATE – No stream available
Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. ET
Lane will host
Central State this week at Lane Field.
The Dragons hope to turn the tide after a tough 27-17 loss to Tuskegee. Although trailing most of the game, Lane’s defense managed to keep the game within reach, holding the Golden Tigers to a one-score differential until midway through the fourth quarter. The offense was unable to cash in, going scoreless in the second half.
Central State suffered a heartbreaking 25-20 homecoming loss to Clark Atlanta. In the team’s best offensive performance this season, the Marauders slowly ate away at the Panther’s lead until they scored the go-ahead field goal with seconds left in the game. The one point lead only lasted 31 seconds, when Clark Atlanta drove 58 yards to score the game winning touchdown.
Against common opponents (Miles and Clark Atlanta), both teams came up short, though Central State’s defense allowed fewer points.
When the two teams met last season, the Marauders turned on the jets in the second half to win the game 17-14 at home after being down 14-3 at halftime.
Game History: 6-4 Central State (since 2013)
Team Standings: Lane (1-5, 1-4 SIAC); Central State (1-5, 1-3 SIAC)
EDWARD WATERS VS. SAVANNAH STATE – No stream available
Saturday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. ET
Edward Waters, returning from a bye week, will host
Savannah State at Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium in a battle of the Tigers.
Edward Waters posted the team’s fifth consecutive loss of the season in a special teams meltdown against Fort Valley State. The unit allowed two touchdown punt returns in the rainy 48-14 defeat.
Savannah State had another solid week, securing a 30-18 victory over Lincoln University of California (Independent). The Tigers took the lead early on and capitalized on both the air and ground game to extend their advantage. Lincoln attempted a late comeback, but the Tigers’ defense held firm.
Against common opponents (Fort Valley State and Tuskegee), Savannah State has a slight advantage, having defeated Tuskegee 20-16 in week three. Both teams fell to Fort Valley State, but Edward Waters had a smaller margin of defeat.
Game History: 5-2 Savannah State (since 2008)
Team Standings: Edward Waters (1-5, 1-3 SIAC); Savannah State (3-3, 2-2 SIAC)
