PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — The Kentucky State men's golf team took home first in the University of Pikeville Fall Invite as the two-day tournament wrapped at the StoneCrest Golf Course Tuesday afternoon. The individual field was highlighted by a sweep of first, second and third by the Thorobreds.
Max Dufey won the tournament outright (206),
Micah Stangebye finished second (209) and
Robert Johnson took third (210).
A second-round 10-under team score sealed the deal for the Thorobreds, as that would lead to a 15-under 13-stroke win over host Pikeville. Kentucky State also defeated nearby Georgetown, who finished fourth (+11) by 26 strokes.
Dufey earned his spot atop the leaderboard at a career low of 10-under in three rounds. His best tournament round came with seven birdies and a 67 (-4) finish in the second round. In rounds one and three, he shot a 3-under, 69.
An opening round 69 (-3) compiled with a 70 (-2) in rounds two and three led Stangebye to a 7-under tournament total and a second-place finish, his best of the fall season.
Improving by one stroke in each round, Johnson scored a 71 (-1) in round one, a 70 (-2) in the second and a 69 (-3) in the final round to finish 6-under in the tournament and earn third as an individual.
Cadyn Sava finished 10-over but fired a 2-under (69) to finish twentieth and
Demar James finished with a 17-over, with his best round coming in the second round with a 73 (+1).
Kentucky State will look to continue their success on Oct 7-8 at the Kyle Ryman Invitational in Tiffin, Ohio.
