FRANKFORT, Ky. —
Shannon Niles,
Diara McBroom and
Naja Fenelon combined for 50 points as
Kentucky State women's basketball edged out
Savannah State 68-63, on Saturday inside Exum.
Niles led all scorers with 18 points, shooting an efficient 7-of-11 from the field. She also contributed with two rebounds and one assist. McBroom added 17 points, combining a strong 6-of-8 performance from the free-throw line with five field goals.
Naja Fenelon chipped in with 15 points, showcasing her efficiency by making all six of her field-goal attempts.
The Tigers opened the scoring with a free throw, but Fenelon quickly responded with a layup and McBroom followed with a three-pointer to give Kentucky State an early 5-2 lead. Savannah State evened the score at 5-5 with a layup at the 8:44 mark of the first quarter.
Savannah State closed the first quarter on a 14-2 run, capped by a layup with 19 seconds remaining, to take a 25-17 advantage.
Kentucky State fought back late in the second quarter with a 7-2 run sparked by Niles.
Mondrea Williams tied the game at 31-31 with a free throw just before halftime.
Khalia Bryant's jumper capped a 10-2 Kentucky State run, giving the Thorobreds a 41-37 lead with 5:11 left in the third quarter.
Niles extended Kentucky State's lead to its largest of the game, converting an and-one at the 5:28 mark of the fourth quarter to put the Thorobreds ahead 61-52.
Despite a late push from Savannah State, Bryant sealed the victory with a clutch jumper with 14 seconds remaining, securing a 68-63 win for Kentucky State.
The Thorobreds will remain at home as they host Edward Waters on Monday, Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m. inside the Exum Center.
