FAIRFIELD, Ala. —
Miles got a balanced effort from its entire roster and used a dominant second half to secure a 67-50 win over
Savannah State on Saturday afternoon at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Twelve different players scored for the Lady Bears (7-2, 5-1 SIAC West), who held the Tigers (6-6, 2-4 SIAC East) to 25 percent shooting in the second half.
The Lady Bears never led in the first half and found themselves trailing 30-27 at the break. But a 9-0 run to start the second half got Miles on track.
Tawana Nevels started the run with a bucket, and
Iemyiah Harris drained a 3-pointer to give the Lady Bears their first lead. Four straight free throws from
Asha Shareef staked the Lady Bears to a 36-30 advantage. A late basket from Shareef with just more than a minute remaining helped Miles end the quarter with a 48-41 lead.
The Tigers cut their deficit to four points at the start of the final period, but an 11-0 run gave the Lady Bears control of the contest. A basket by
Feliah Greer gave Miles its first double-digit lead with 4:51 left, and
Tederia Ashley scored off a feed from
Eunique McKinney to close the stretch and give Miles a 59-44 lead with 3:44 remaining. The lead swelled as large as 19 points when
Nakedria Turner knocked down a 3-ball with 30 seconds left.
Amani Hamilton scored 13 points, and Kayla Grant added 10 points to pace Savannah State. Shareef scored a team-high 11 points in 13 minutes while adding four rebounds, Greer (nine points, nine rebounds, six assists),
India Brown (eight points) and
Makayla Rieves (seven points) were among the top scorers, and
Kiyara Howard-Garza (six points, three steals) and Harris (six points, three assists, two steals) were solid for Miles, which is back in action on Jan. 2 when it plays at Clark Atlanta.
