Nine Golden Bears named to D2CCA All-Super Region Two squad

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Nine members of the Miles College football team were named to the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-Super Region Two team, which was released today. The Golden Bears had the most players receive first and second team honors among all the schools in Super Region Two and the most in any single season in school history.

Defensive back Lashon Young and defensive lineman Jamichael Rogers were selected to the receive first team honors and are eligible for the D2CCA All-America team. Seven more student-athletes — tight end Travaunta Abner, offensive tackle Christian Twymon, offensive guard Jason Stovall, defensive end Roc Dowdell, linebacker William Hardy, safety Jeremiah Hudson-Davis, and cornerback Cam Williams — earned second team honors.
 
All selections were made by the vote of the sports information directors from each of the member institutions in Super Region Two.

"This means that people are recognizing the work being done at Miles by our coaching staff and players," said head coach Sam Shade. "It gives validity to work that we put in as a team. It tells our young players that if you put in work, you can be recognized on the region and national level."

FIRST TEAM HONOREES

Young, a sophomore defensive back from Sweet Water, Ala., was named SIAC Defensive Player of the Year is an All-SIAC first team selection. He currently leads NCAA Division II in interceptions with eight. He also has 14 total passes defended, which is tied for 12th in the nation. He finished the season with 53 tackles (42 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and an interception that was returned for a touchdown. He also had two games with two interceptions.

Rogers, a redshirt junior from Bessemer, Ala., enjoyed a dominant campaign where he earned All-SIAC second team honors as a defensive lineman for the second consecutive season. He led the SIAC with 18.5 tackles for loss and is currently tied for fifth nationally. Rogers also registered a team-high eight sacks, which is fifth in the SIAC and tied for eighth in Division II. He closed the season with has 53 tackles (39 solo), 11 quarterback hurries, a pass breakup and a forced fumble.


SECOND TEAM HONOREES

Abner, a junior tight end from Lanett, Ala., currently has 26 catches for 334 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games this season. Abner was earned first team All-SIAC honors this season while also winning the SIAC Elite 16 award, the league's highest academic achievement honor, which recognizes the student-athletes who display exemplary performances in athletics and the classroom. Abner currently holds a 3.75 grade point average. He has also been a strong blocker that has established the Golden Bears as one of the top offensive teams in the SIAC.

Twymon, a senior from Sylacauga, Ala., was a first team All-SIAC pick at offensive lineman. Lining up at left tackle, Twymon started all 13 games and has been a starter all four years he has been in the Golden Bears program. This season, he has 35 pancake blocks, had a 90 percent overall grade, as has allowed just one sack.

Stovall, a redshirt senior from Atlanta, was a preseason All-SIAC pick and earned his first selection to the All-SIAC First Team. A left guard, Stovall started all 13 games and has 29 pancake blocks. He had an overall grade of 89 percent and allowed just one sack this season.

Dowdell, a senior from Lanett, Ala., earned first team All-SIAC honors as a defensive lineman. He has been a terror to offenses all season, as he is nationally ranked in sacks (7.5, t-20th) and has 13.5 tackles for loss, which is fifth in the SIAC. This season, Dowdell had 55 tackles (33 solo), two fumble recoveries and a safety.

Hardy, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., was earned second team All-SIAC honors as a linebacker. He leads the Golden Bears and was fifth in the SIAC with 78 tackles (46 solo). He has nine tackles for loss, two sacks, three pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown this season.

Hudson-Davis, a sophomore from Fairfield, Ala., was seventh in the SIAC with 74 tackles and second in solo tackles (56). He offered the complete defensive package each week for the Golden Bears, finishing with two sacks, four interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, two quarterback hurries and five pass breakups.

Williams, a redshirt sophomore from Bessemer, Ala., earned All-SIAC second team honors as a defensive back. He was one of the top corners in the conference, with 20 tackles (15 solo), three interceptions and 11 pass breakups, which led the SIAC. His 14 passes defended was tied for the league lead with teammate Young and is tied for 12th nationally.
