Clark Atlanta volleyball takes down LaGrange College to open home slate

Freshman Deja Jackson hoists career-high 44 assists

ATLANTA — Clark Atlanta University women's volleyball opened up its 2024 home schedule with a convincing 3-1 win against LaGrange College inside L.S. Epps Gymnasium this evening. This match marks the Lady Panthers' first win this season to improve to 1-4.

Coming off a four-game tournament at the Lander University Redderson Invitational, the Panthers came out swinging. Every set came down to the wire, but Clark Atlanta came out on top at the end.

Leading 12-5, Clark obtained an early lead with kills from Shynique McGeeSawyer Arbuckle and Halle Mitchell. However, Lagrange was able to catch up and cut the score down to 12-10. The Lady Panthers didn't let that stop them; Mitchell and McGee were able to lead their team with a 5-0 run to eventually close out the first set with a win.

After losing set two, the Panthers knew that they had to get going. Set three came close, and both teams were trading points until CAU won 25-22. Clark again had a consistent lead in set four, leading 16-6 to start. Mitchell and McGee had big-time kills and combined for 11 kills to seal the deal. With McGee getting a kill assisted by Deja Jackson, the final score was 25-17.

The Lady Panthers dominated Lagrange in several team categories, including points (66-46), kills (53-33), blocks (7-6), assists (49-28), and digs (65-54).

The game leaders tonight were McGee (18) and Mitchell (17). They combined for 35 kills and three aces. McGee had 18 kills, one ace, and one assist. Mitchell had 17 kills, two aces, one block, and one dig. Freshman setter Jackson also had a career night with 44 assists in her home debut.

The Lady Panthers will look to gain another win against Florida Memorial University (1-9, 0-2) on Friday, Sep. 13, at 6 p.m. at FMU Wellness Center.
