Balanced Attack, Takeaways Power Kentucky State Past Miles 38-17

FAIRFIELD, Ala. — Kentucky State's defense came away with three interceptions, and the Thorobreds' efficient offense powered a 38-17 road win over Miles on Saturday afternoon.
 
Coming off his SIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, quarterback Torrence Bardell posted a 162.4 passer rating, completing 21 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the Thorobreds on the ground with 52 rushing yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry on eight attempts.
 
Wide receiver Jon McCall led Kentucky State with eight receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
 
The Kentucky State defense continued its ball-hawking ways as three Thorobreds recorded interceptions in the win. Navy Curry returned his pick 48 yards, while Lawrence McConnell added a 12-yard return and Mataye Youman chipped in with a nine-yard interception.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Miles opened the scoring with a 22-yard field goal at the 9:06 mark of the first quarter to take an early 3-0 lead.
 
Kentucky State answered midway through the period as quarterback Bardell found Jon McCall for a 19-yard touchdown strike. Leland Gantz added the extra point to put the Thorobreds ahead 7-3. Gantz later connected on a 35-yard field goal with 2:26 remaining in the first quarter, extending the lead to 10-3.
 
The Thorobreds broke the game open in the second quarter, marching 82 yards on eight plays before Chad Elzy punched in a three-yard rushing touchdown at 12:49. Bardell followed with his second touchdown pass of the day, a 16-yard completion to Joshua Thomas to make it 24-3. Jaylen Middleton capped the first-half surge with a five-yard touchdown run at the 7:58 mark, giving Kentucky State a commanding 31-3 advantage.
 
Miles managed to cut into the deficit with a 17-yard touchdown pass late in the half (2:57), but Kentucky State carried a 31-10 lead into the locker room.
 
Bardell and McCall connected again early in the fourth quarter on a 29-yard scoring pass just eight seconds into the period (14:52) to extend the Thorobreds' lead to 37-10.
 
Miles closed the scoring with a 66-yard touchdown pass at the 7:33 mark, but the Thorobreds' balanced attack and defensive pressure sealed the 38-17 road victory.
