COLUMBIA, S.C. — The
Benedict College Tigers scored 17 fourth-quarter points to rally past
Allen, 38-28, on Saturday in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium to remain unbeaten.
The Tigers, now 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the SIAC, jumped out to a 21-7 first-quarter lead, only to see the Yellow Jackets score 21 unanswered points to take a 28-21 lead late in the third quarter.
Benedict got a 30-yard field goal by
Zane Spires early in the fourth quarter, then took the lead on a 57-yard run by
A'chean Durant. The Tigers added a late touchdown on a 5-yard run by
Triston Morgan.
The Benedict defense held Allen running back Fabian Duncan, the SIAC's leading rusher, to just 53 yards on 16 carries. The Tiger defense, the nation's leader in forced fumbles and turnover margin, continued their disruptive power by forcing a pair of Allen fumbles, scored on an interception and a blocked punt. The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the SIAC.
Isaiah Stephens led the Tiger defense with a Benedict career-high 14 tackles and added a pair of sacks. Benedict sacked Allen quarterback Jamir Dismukes five times.
Benedict opened the game with a big-play pass to
Jaxon Williams to the Allen 2-yard line, then later tossed a short touchdown pass to
Troy Hillman in the back corner of the end zone. The Yellow Jackets answered with an 88-yard kickoff return to set up a one-yard touchdown run by Dismukes to tie the game .
A 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by
Jahmal Sam gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead. The Tiger defense scored another touchdown on Allen's next possession, when
Joshua Stephens blocked a punt and
David Smith ran it in for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 21-7 lead.
The Yellow Jackets scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns, including an 80-yard score, to tie the game at 21 at the half.
Allen scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter after intercepting a
Darius Ocean pass to take a 28-21 lead with just over a minute left in the third quarter.
The Tigers are home again next week when they host the Fort Valley State Wildcats at 2 p.m. in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
