Thornton Leads Savannah State In Road Win Over LeMoyne-Owen

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Playing their first road and conference game of the season, Jazmin Thornton had 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Savannah State to a 63-51 win over LeMoyne-Owen on Thursday evening at Bruce Hall/Johnson Gymnasium.

Thornton shot 5-for-7 from the field and made 3 of her 5 free throw attempts.

As a team, Savannah State shot 45.8 percent from the floor and 81 percent from the charity stripe.

The Lady Tigers held LeMoyne-Owen to just 9 offensive rebounds as they won the rebounding battle 34-22. 

SSU led by four after the first quarter and took a 28-22 advantage into intermission.

LeMoyne-Owen cut their deficit to three in the third quarter but the Lady Tigers answered by scoring the next 13 points to go ahead by 16 with just over five minutes left. 

Savannah State led by as many as 18 in the third quarter and took a 50-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Magicians scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to get within single digits but SSU answered with a layup and a jumper from Jaliyah Harperand a layup by Raven Brit to increase their lead to 56-41 with 6:37 remaining.

LeMoyne-Owen never got as close as 11 the rest of the way.

Harper led Savannah State with 18 points while Sanai Chisholm added ten points and four steals.

Birt had seven points, Haylee Malcum scored six, Makaila Johnson added four, Ansley Hicks scored three and Saniya Rice chipped in two.

Savannah State (2-0, 1-0 SIAC) will face Lane on the road on November 22 at 2 p.m. CST/3 p. m. EST.
