JACKSON, Tenn. —
Miles continued its roll through conference play with a 78-66 win over
Lane on Saturday afternoon at J.F. Lane Gymnasium. The win was the 12th straight for the Golden Bears (21-3, 17-1 SIAC West), who have also won 11 consecutive games against the Dragons (5-18, 5-13).
The Golden Bears took control of the game in the first half, shooting 54 percent from the field and opening a double-digit lead before the break. A 3-pointer by
Elijah Horton (eight points, three rebounds) gave Miles a 26-15 lead midway through the half, which was the first time the lead was more than 10 points. But Lane really ran into trouble during a two-and-a-half-minute stretch shortly thereafter. Between two 3-pointers by Rico Sain II, the Dragons missed five consecutive shots from the field as Miles scored nine straight points.
Travarus Carroll closed the run with two buckets, including a back-breaking 3-ball, that pushed the Miles advantage to 37-20 with seven minutes left before halftime.
Ahead 48-36 at the half, Miles dominated the opening seven minutes of the final frame. A 12-3 run was more than enough to eliminate much doubt about the final outcome.
Corey Trotter (six points, game-high 14 rebounds) scored the first two baskets, and
Alvin Miles added two baskets of his own—including a 3-pointer. Carroll (12 points) would score to eclipse the 20-point margin point before
Chase Ballard scored with 12:51 left to open a 62-40 advantage, the largest of the game. Lane would not get any closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Christopher Matthews scored 20 points and Elijah Greer Dawson added 16 points to lead the Dragons.
Rylen Walker (16 points), Miles (15 points) and Ballard (11 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals) led the charge for the Golden Bears, who host Central State on Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.
