Allen Defeats Benedict in Battle for Taylor Street

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Allen University men's basketball team saw every player who stepped onto the floor Saturday score a basket in the Yellow Jackets' win over Benedict College, 59-52.

The rivalry clash did not begin the way Allen intended for it to as Benedict jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first two minutes of Saturday's contest. However, five points from Peyton Weathersby and a three-point shot from Ethan Hill quickly tied the game for Allen, 8-8, with 13:47 left in the first half. Over the next three minutes, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-8 advantage and force a Benedict timeout. While the Allen lead held strong for the majority of the remaining minutes before the break, Benedict was able to climb back in front with a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds to send the teams into the locker rooms with Benedict ahead, 28-27. The Yellow Jackets quickly reclaimed their lead at the start of the second half as Allen took a 31-30 lead on a layup from Akhwari Smith with 15:33 remaining. Once they were back in front, Allen never looked back as the Yellow Jackets never trailed or saw Benedict tie the game for the remainder of the evening.

Freshman guard Hunter Johnson set a new career-best in the win with a team-high 13 points. Johnson also co-led the Yellow Jackets, along with Demetri Patterson, with an additional career-high of six rebounds.

Allen returns to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Clark Atlanta. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Atlanta, Georgia.
