Kentucky State Thorobreds Shut Down Marauders in Fourth Quarter to Secure Win

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Junior forward Khalia Bryant and Senior forward Mondrea Williams record double-double as Kentucky State women's basketball defeated Central State 51-47 in an intense Saturday bought.
 
Williams recorded a game-high 17 rebounds and added 12 points, while Bryant nearly perfect at the free-throw line, going 9-of-10, finishing with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
 
Senior guard Naja Fenelon went 6-7 from the field and made two shots from beyond the arc to lead Kentucky State with 14 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fenelon opened the contest with a 3-pointer to put the first points on the board for the Thorobreds. The brief lead was short-lived as the Marauders converted a Kentucky State turnover for a quick two points to take a seven-point 12-7 lead at 4:52 of the first quarter.
 
Freshman guard Aaliyah Hayes capitalized on a Central State turnover, cutting the Thorobreds' deficit to 25-23, but the Marauders responded with a 3-pointer in the final minute to take a 28-23 lead into halftime.
 
Central State went on an eight-point run to take a 10-point 37-27 lead at the 6:04 mark of the third quarter.
 
Junior guard Diara McBroom found a 3-pointer to tie the game 39-39 with 6:23 remaining in regulation.

The Thorobreds were able to hold their edge as Fenelon hit a 3-pointer with 2:09 left in the fourth. Hayes made one of her two attempts in the final seconds of the fourth to secure a 51-47 victory over the Marauders.
 
UP NEXT
Kentucky State will have a break from play before heading to Memphis, Tennessee to face LeMoyne-Owen.
