ROCHESTER, N.Y. —
Central State University turned in a commanding performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating Lane College, 42-13, at the Frederick Douglass HBCU Classic inside the Rochester Community Sports Plex. The Marauders not only secured their first win of the 2025 campaign but did so in emphatic fashion, powered by explosive plays, defensive takeaways, and a strong running game. This win gives head coach
Tony Carter his first career win.
FAST RESPONSE SETS THE TONE
After Lane struck first with a Peyton Nero 2-yard touchdown run midway through the opening quarter, CSU wasted no time in responding. On the very next play from scrimmage, sophomore running back
Dai'Vontay Young broke free for a 59-yard touchdown sprint, knotting the game at 7-7 and setting the stage for a Marauder takeover.
MARAUDERS TAKE CONTROL BEFORE HALFTIME
The second quarter belonged to Central State. Quarterback
Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell connected with
Avante Burt a 33-yard strike, followed by a successful two-point conversion from
Stephen Hogan to push CSU ahead, 15-7. Minutes later, the defense delivered the highlight of the afternoon:
Travion Searcy intercepted a Lane pass and raced 59 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 23-7 heading into halftime.
DEFENSE DOMINATES
While Lane attempted to mount a rally in the second half, the Marauder defense was relentless. CSU defenders recorded five sacks, forced four fumbles, and scored directly on defense when
Domonique Davis II recovered a loose ball in the end zone early in the fourth quarter. Davis finished with 12 tackles and two tackles-for-loss in a dominant effort.
RUSHING ATTACK SEALS THE WIN
The Marauder offense controlled the ground game, piling up 209 rushing yards on just 31 carries. Young led the way with 112 yards and his long touchdown run, while
Jaden Bossie added 56 yards and a rushing score.
Donaiz Barker capped the scoring with a late one-yard touchdown plunge to make it 42-13.
FINAL NUMBERS
- CSU outgained Lane on the ground, 209 to 99.
- The Marauders defense held Lane to just 3.9 yards per play and forced five turnovers.
- Campbell-Caldwell managed the offense efficiently, completing 10-of-17 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.
