Benedict Tops Edward Waters 63-61 In Overtime

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Malachi Chavis hit a go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime, and Kameron Foman tipped in a missed shot with less than a minute remaining to help seal a 63-61 Benedict College victory over Edward Waters in a SIAC men's basketball game on Monday night.
 
Edward Waters tied the game with a layup with five seconds left in regulation to send the contest to overtime. In the extra period, Edward Waters pulled ahead 57-55 after a pair of free throws with 2:17 left to play. On Benedict's next possession, Chavis hit the go-ahead 3-pointer. Edward Waters missed a 3-pointer on their possession. Foman was able to grab the rebound off a Benedict missed shot and score with 52 seconds left. Cole White added a free throw with 36 seconds left to give Benedict a 61-57 lead.
 
The Tigers had a 50-46 lead with 1:22 left in regulation, but Edward Waters hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds on the clock, then tied the game on a layup with five seconds remaining.
 
Benedict placed four players in double figures, with Chavis and Landon Jeffries scoring 15 points each. Tareeq Anderson scored 14 points and grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Foman chipped in 12 points and grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds.
 
Benedict dominated the boards, out-rebounding Edward Waters 57-44. The Tigers held EWU to 23.8 percent shooting (15-of-63).
 
The Tigers improve to 7-7 overall and 7-7 in the SIAC. Edward Waters falls to 8-10 overall and 6-8 in the SIAC.
 
The Tigers return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, when they host Central State in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
