SANTA BARBARA, Calif. —
Kentucky State opened the 2026 season Thursday afternoon with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-12 loss to NCAA Division I opponent UC Santa Barbara at Rob Gym as part of the Asics Invitational.
In their first match against a nationally ranked opponent, the Thorobreds were led by five kills from
Charles Ababio. He also co-led Kentucky State with five digs, alongside Ryker Noteboom, who matched Ababio. Seeing the floor in all three sets,
Jackson Moffitt led the Thorobreds with 10 assists, one service ace and one block.
In the opening set, the Gauchos tallied seven kills and three service aces to take the set 25-14.
Kentucky State started the second set staying close to Santa Barbara, coming within three at 9-6 after a kill from Noteboom. UC Santa Barbara went on to win the set 25-13.
Although the Thorobreds tied the third set in the opening serves, the Gauchos took control and won the set 25-12 to defeat Kentucky State 3-0 in the match.
