Miles Wins Two at Ron Washington Classic

Miles Wins Two at Ron Washington Classic

NEW ORLEANS — Miles' trip to the Crescent City for the Ron Washington Classic got off to a great start but did not have the ending the program was looking for was the Golden Bears (5-1) won two of three games over the weekend.

Kyle Cline (2-0) had his second straight strong outing, going six innings and allowing just four hits while striking out seven as Miles defeated Xavier 9-0 on Friday. The Golden Bears scored five times in the third inning to give Cline all the run support he needed. Trace Spann, Ajani Lyons and Elyjah Anderson each had RBI in the frame. Miles added two runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh by way of a BoBo Barnes 2-run single.

On Saturday, Miles broke open a close game by scoring four times in the seventh en route to a 9-4 win over Southern University of New Orleans. The Golden Bears led 3-0 but the Knights scored twice in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 4. But Landon Whitehead's run-scoring single in the fifth plated Michael Smith to put Miles back in front. Kaleb Raston's sac fly added to the lead in the seventh before Myles Wessels bases-loaded double scored three more to break the game open. Jaelyn Rhynes (2-0) pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits but striking out seven to pick up the victory.

The Golden Bears were three outs away from sweeping the tournament on Sunday but gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh to drop a 5-4 decision to Rust. Miles scored each of their runs without the courtesy of a hit. Wessels had a bases loaded walk in the second and Kaden Burch added one in the third. Antwan Jackson's sacrifice fly in the third made it 3-0 and a field's choice by Gregory Willis scored Wessels for a 4-0 lead. But Brayden Davis and Anthony Barton (0-1) could not shut down the Bobcats. The duo gave up two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen, with an infield squibber scoring the game-winning run.

The Golden Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Morris College. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
