Benedict Lady Tigers Upset 16th-Ranked Miles, 66-62

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Ghylissa Knowles hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to give Benedict its first lead of the game as the Lady Tigers rallied from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit and knocked off the 16th-ranked Miles College Lady Golden Bears 66-62 in a SIAC women's basketball game on Thursday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
 
Miles had a 61-50 lead with 5:10 left in the game when the Lady Tigers began their comeback. Benedict scored eight consecutive points to cut the lead to 61-58 with 3:09 left to play. Miles made one of two free throws with 2:57 left on the clock. Benedict then got a pair of free throws by Andrea Duncan with 1:54 remaining to cut the lead to 62-60, and tied the game on a layup by Duncan with 42 seconds remaining.
 
After a Miles turnover, Knowles hit an off-balance 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to give the Lady Tigers their first lead of the game. Miles missed a 3-pointer on their next possession. The Lady Tigers sealed the game with a free throw with 13 seconds left for a four-point lead, and Miles missed a pair of 3-pointers in the final four seconds.
 
Benedict improves to 10-7 overall and 10-7 in the SIAC. Miles falls to 17-5 overall and 15-3 in the SIAC.
 
Duncan led the Lady Tigers with a season-high 21 points. Raven Johnson added 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Aaliyah Lawrence chipped in 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
 
Miles opened the game by scoring the first 16 points, but Benedict responded by closing the first quarter with a 19-3 run to tie the game at 19. The second quarter remained close, with Miles taking a 38-33 lead at the half. Miles had as much as a 10-point lead in the third quarter, but the Lady Tigers stormed back to cut the lead to a point before the Lady Golden Bears took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Benedict is back in action on Saturday, hosting Tuskegee at 1 p.m.
