Spring Hill Edged Out on Home Opener

MOBILE, Ala. — The Spring Hill College baseball team dropped its home opener 4-2 against visiting the University of Montevallo this afternoon at Historic Sims-Galle Field. The Badgers are now 0-4 on the season, and the Falcons moved to 3-1.

After four scoreless innings for both teams, Montevallo struck first in the top of the fifth. The Falcons pushed a run across on a hit, a sacrifice bunt, and took advantage of an error to take a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons added three more runs in the top of the eighth on a pair of hits and two errors to push their lead to 4-0.

Spring Hill broke through in its half of the eighth to cut the lead in half. It started when Reggie Cooper reached first off a throwing error by the shortstop. He later scored when Alex Roux tripled to the right-center field gap to make it 4-1. Following a flyout to right, Eli Benoit's sac-fly to right allowed Roux to tag and score to cut the lead to 4-2 before the inning ended.

Montevallo's bullpen set the Badgers down in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.

Both teams combined for seven hits and nine walks.

Badger starting pitcher Donovan Monsees allowed one run on one hit while striking out one and walking four to take the loss (0-1). Reliever Garrett Lott scattered one hit over two and two-thirds innings of work.

Roux paced all Spring Hitters, going 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI, a triple, and a walk. Teammate Gavin Moran tallied the team's only other hit.

Spring Hill is back home this weekend when it hosts Delta State University for a three-game series that begins on Friday at 5 p.m.
