MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Coming off its first loss of the season,
Miles looked to regroup as it faced three tough opponents at the Patriot Day Classic hosted by Christian Brothers on Friday and Saturday. While the Lady Bears (4-3) were able to collect a four-set win over Claflin (25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 25-18), they were not as fortunate against Quincy (16-25, 14-25, 12-25) and host CBU (21-25, 22-25, 19-25).
Kori Brown took a star turn in the win over the Lady Panthers, hitting .353 with 17 kills as Miles earned its first-ever win over their former conference counterparts. She also had four service aces, three of which came right at the start of the match as Claflin had trouble with serve receive. Miles had a set point opportunity but could not capitalize before dropping the second game. In the third set, an
Addisyn Doss kill and service ace by
Nevaeh Bellamy closed out the game to put the Lady Bears back on top. In the final set, Miles hit .441 (16-1-34) with
Alyzia Cola (four kills, 31 assists, 12 digs) setting up
Karea Copeland (14 kills, 15 digs) and Brown for the final two winners.
Bailey Jones had a team-high 17 digs and
Aida Edwards finished with five kills and two solo blocks for Miles.
Miles appeared to have run out of steam in the match against Quincy. The first set was close before three straight attack errors opened the door for the Hawks to finish off the opening game. In the second set, a block by
Destinee Evans (who had three solo blocks in the match) and kill by Copeland had given Miles a 12-7 edge before the Hawks scored 16 consecutive points to take control. In the final set, Quincy took a 7-1 lead and never looked back. Overall, Miles hit -.040 as a team with 23 attack errors against 19 kills. Copeland had 10 of the kills and
Aida Edwards added seven for the Lady Bears.
On Saturday, the Lady Bears looked rested and played a hotly contested match against the Lady Bucs. Doss took a feed from Jones (14 digs, two assists) in the first set to give Miles a 20-17 lead but CBU scored the next six points to help take Game 1. The second set saw a similar scenario. With the game tied at 20, CBU scored three straight points to forge ahead. Miles cut it the 23-22 before the Lady Bucs closed it out.
Cydney Moore (11 assists, seven digs) assisted Bellamy (four kills) to tie the third set at 19 before Miles surrendered the final six points and the match. Copeland (11 kills, 12 digs) had another double-double, Evans (eight kills, three blocks and Cola (14 assists, nine digs) also played well for the Lady Bears, who host Talladega on Wednesday. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
